The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma
In a benefit performance for the Lifetime Assistance Foundation

Rochester, NY – The most celebrated instrumentalist of his generation brings his hand picked ensemble to the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) on Thursday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m. for a special single performance concert event. The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma is making only eight stops on its current tour, and this will be the only performance in New York State.

Hosted by Lifetime Assistance Foundation, the 14th Annual Inspiration Award Event raises funds and awareness for Lifetime Assistance, Inc., a local not-for-profit providing support for programs and services to area citizens with developmental disabilities and their families.

Yo-Yo Ma is the founder and artistic director of the Silk Road Ensemble, a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. Each Ensemble member's career illustrates a unique response to what is one of the artistic challenges of our times: nourishing global connections while maintaining the integrity of art rooted in an authentic tradition.

The Silk Road Ensemble has given performances in locations ranging from concert halls to stadiums to museum galleries throughout the world, including Millennium Park in Chicago, Carnegie Hall in New York, Shanghai Stadium in China, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the United Nations General Assembly Hall.

“We are honored to host the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma, and proud to share this world-class event with the Greater Rochester community”, says Lifetime Assistance Inc. President & CEO James Branciforte. “This benefit performance promises to be the premier concert event of the summer.”

This program from the critically acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma will reflect the diversity of this exceptional group of musicians, ranging from China to India, from Persia to Europe to the Americas. The Boston Globe has called the Ensemble "a kind of roving musical laboratory without walls," and the Seattle Times, "instrumental and vocal artists of almost unimaginable virtuosity."

Along with arrangements of traditional music from several cultures, this concert will also feature works commissioned for the Ensemble's distinctive assemblage of instruments from Silk Road lands, percussion and Western strings. Highlights include Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov's Air to Air, which he has described as "music borne of community," and The Taranta Project, a feverishly inventive work by the Sicilian composer Giovanni Sollima.

The Silk Road Ensemble's music transcends customary classification. Their joy in performing together is contagious, igniting the mind and touching the heart.

Tickets for The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma at the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. are $29-$79, and are available through Ticketmaster at (800)745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com, and all Ticketmaster outlets.

Media, please note: High-resolution photos, broadcast-quality video, and advance interviews with Lifetime Assistance Inc. President & CEO James Branciforte and new Executive Director Mary Howard may be arranged.
